Thankful Thursday ~ My Mother's Keepsakes

I've been going through my mother's things the past few days.  It's hard, but not as hard as it was the last time I tried to do it.
This time I found an envelope full of photos, and the above tintype?
It is an image of my great grandparents, James Wood & Frances K. Smith Black Nichols.  I'm guessing the photos were taken 1880-1890 as James died in 1903. James was born in 1837 and Frances in 1840.  I think they look to be in their 50's or so.
I do wish I could see the bottom half of James' face- that mustache is crazy huge!

It's a wonderful find and I am so thankful my mom decided to keep this and quite a few other photographs of her ancestors.  I have seen James' photo before in a book and also online, but I have never seen the photograph of my great grandmother.

These are such treasures. I have some photos of great grandparents too, on my Dad's side, no dates on them, and none from my Mum's side in Scotland. Imagine living in those long skirts during the hot summers, washing by hand, ironing, and all else they had to do every day.

I have always wondered why they were so serious in pictures back then. It is nice that you have them. sandie

How do kiss and have kids and stuff when you have a moustache like that? Apparently they worked it out though.

Oh I can sit an stare at old pictures like these forever. My husband has a box old family pictures and he has no idea who any of the very old one are, and there is no one left in the family old enough to know either. On one of the old pictures someone wrote "grandma's first boyfriend" with a little arrow pointing to a man. No names! :)

So wonderful to be able to glimpse a part of your history. We can know of them but seeing them captured in that moment so much better. I have yet to see an old tintype where the objects smiled. Must have been the custom of the day.

To me, I think old photos are the best kind of keepsakes. Nothing like seeing family members from the past and often times seeing resemblances! Thanks for linking up!

What a treasured photo, Terri. I love the old photos of our ancestors. I used to spend time looking through my Mom's old photos when I visited her, and wondering what the story was behind the picture. It's nice that you have a few of your Mother's keepsakes.

Happy Valentine's Day.

So interesting to see that far back into the past. Your great-grandmother looks to be carrying the weight of the world with calm resignation.
