Foto Friday 14 ~ Memories

I am so thankful for all the photos and documents that have been passed down to me. I'm still tackling the giant box of old photos and this one reminds me so much of my past.   The two folks beside my young cousin are my grandma and grandpa.  The little short fella is my great grandfather. I wasn't in the picture or even in the house when this photo was made, but it evokes so many similar memories.  Notice there are no drinks on the table.  I remember my grandpa would finish his meal (Always, always, always peas and cornbread and a meat) and then he would crumble up cornbread in a glass of buttermilk.  Ok yuck, I always thought, but what I wouldn't give for a chance to sit across from him again.

The women in the photo are all my kin.  This photo made me remember my husband's grandma and how she would never eat with us, and always stood around the table, bringing us napkins or more food or more drink.  I had never seen that before and it was quite a shock to a newly married bride to think my husband was raised this way.  Needless to say, I sit with my family to eat, but I wonder if women standing and serving was more of a custom that I ever knew.

Here is just one of hundreds of negatives my grandmother and mother saved.  I have to figure out how to make a print out of it, but so far I can't even find the equipment needed.

It's the hats that intrigue me!  My papa is on the right, and he always tilted his hat to one side like that.  I think these are three brothers.  If anyone knows how to make photos out of negatives, let me know.  These are the square ones from the 50s and 60s, but I also have hundreds of my own from the 80s and 90s.  It makes me sad to think of all the digital photos I have that are just stored on my computer and some still sitting on my phone.  Actually, facebook is sort of the new photo album.  It certainly is where I get to see my grands and greats photos.

Back to work or I will never get through this box.  Have a great weekend all!

What great photos. My brother found so many old pictures last summer. We really did enjoy that. I do have so many on my computer too. My Dad's favorite dessert in the whole world was cornbread and buttermilk. I hadn't thought of that until you said that about your Grandpa. My grandmother was like that too. She never sat and ate with us either. She did the same. I always thought about that too. I do find myself doing it sometimes when all my kids are here. Have a lovely weekend.

These are great! That’s interesting about your grandma. She took care of everyone before her own needs. Not sure that was a regular thing, customs passed down maybe. I will have to ask hubs as he has a lot of memories of his own grandma. I hope you get some help on here about turning your negatives into photos.

Oh, what treasured photos these are. I was thinking about your story of when your husband's grandma would never eat with you all and stood around the table serving. My mom would always be in the kitchen, making sure everyone was taken care of, so Yes, this may have been a tradition, and it was a good one I think. That's so nice that you are going through old photos right now and trying to save the ones you truly love. I have mine in photo albums, and I'll never part with them. And like you, many of today's photos are on the computer. I wish you well with this project, and it's something that many don't get around to doing. Good for you, Terri.

Your memories bring those old photos vividly to life, turning them into treasured windows to family, tradition, and the small moments that matter most

I love old family photos, or any old photos. I think there might be a solution to printing from negatives. Although I've never used it, I believe my Epson scanner has a setting for "negatives". It will scan a negative and create a positive image from it, which you can then print. The bad news is you might need to buy a scanner if you don't have one.

That's really odd to see no drinks at the table. I never drink anything while I eat and I've never known any others who don't.

So glad to find your link here on Sepia Saturday. These are really great photos, and I can't wait to see more. I have a blog friend photographer in Canada who may know what the negative to positive method might be...here's his link. https://anvilcloud.blogspot.com/

My Mom always served up everyone's dinner before she sat down to eat with us, but we didn't start eating until she was seated. I did the same with my own family and they waited for me too. As to photo negatives, I have the same problem except I have all the pictures that go with them printed out - several copies, in fact. And if I were to need more copies in the future, I could simply scan the prints. So why keep the negatives? Yet every time I think about tossing them, I hesitate because it seems so final.

It would be so great if I had the photos that matched the negatives, but sadly I don't. Thus my big push to figure out the process.

these are really wonderful images, you are lucky to have them. i have some old family photos that i enjoy looking at and i find my boys are totally uninterested, they tell me it's a girl thing!! the hats are intriguing, i find old photos of women also have some interesting hats and they seemed to be an accessory when they are "dressed up"!!! our dinner times were very informal, as the kids got older we did not always eat together and i really missed that!!

I've sat here way too long staring at that first picture. It reminds me so much of my mother's family, and by the way, I still crumble my last piece of cornbread into my milk, preferably buttermilk, but whole milk is delicious too. There were always at least 10 around the long kitchen table at my Aunt Ella Vastie's, when the men came in from the sawmill, or fields for lunch. "Lunch". :) My daddy wore a hat like those in the second picture all his life and he cocked his to the side.
