Outside my Window ~ October 24

I have no idea what kid of butterfly this is.
Fritillary, I think

44 degrees,
steam rising on what is left of my pond after the drought has just about sucked it dry, and
out of the corner of my eye, I see this

bird, which looks strangely like a gull
but not really, but yeah it does.  Anyone? Thanks!  I knew y'all would know and you did- a cormorant.  I guess I have never seen one standing on the bank and didn't realize they were so big!

  6. Hard to tell on the bird, it almost looks like it has a forked tail. I would guess tern if so or cormorant.

  20. I'm guessing a cormorant, too, and a female at that. The males are darker. We use to grow catfish in the Delta and they (along with pelicans) were a nightmare!

I love seeing mist moving over a pond. It's so ethereal!
