Shy Coots

I took the girls out to the lake today to try and take a few senior pics of my oldest granddaughter.  We found a wonderful pier to use.  It had a slough on one side and open water on the other.  The slough was full of coots floating amongst the tall grasses.  They were still and  quiet at first, but they took off pretty quick as we got closer.   Did you know coots can walk on water?

  1. Great shots. The Coots are generally not shy but aggressive birds.

  5. Photography is like that. You plan to photograph one thing and you always see something else that needs to be photographed.

  8. Well, these Coots may be feeling a bit shy after an invasion of Canada Geese. Perhaps.

  10. You don't look old enough to have a grand daughter graduating from high school! I was trying to digest that and almost forgot the coots! Ha.

  11. Great shots , they are quite a shy little bird , I love the way you caught them skimming the water. My pond has a few Moorhens , these are black with a lovely white tail which flicks back and forward.
    Well done love them x

  12. We have them here in the winter and they are rather elusive. They're funny when they take off!

  13. The same the world over. Coots here are mostly shy unless you find some that are accustomed to coming for handouts from people.

  16. I have seen them on the golf course where they are not shy. (This is true of a lot of critters, such as deer, skunks, etc. They get used to people playing and not bothering them.)

    Great pics!
