Bottoms Up

randomly...

The paint is chipping off of the red & blue  bottles on my tree.  They are so expensive to order, I am wondering where I can get free bottles.  We don't drink, so no luck there.  I wish I could find orange and black bottles, I would decorate for fall!

Half of my grands are at the Arkansas State Fair this week.  I am babysitting 9 baby pigs, 1 mama pig, 3 cats, and 2 dogs.  Old McDonald had a farm.  Did I ever tell you how much I love my cat?  LOL!

After 16 days, the Larry, Curly and Moe shutdown appears to be over.  To celebrate, I am heaving a huge sigh of disgust. I haven't been this embarrassed for my country since Clinton.

I had an eye doc appointment this past Monday during which I got bamboozled into ordering 139 dollar "computer" glasses.  I am still in shock that I was stupid enough to pay that much money for what boils down to be high dollar "cheaters" that I usually buy at WW for 16.99.

Yesterday, I heard strange bird calls and looked everywhere for the source.   I've never seen red-bellied woodpeckers on my land before.   It's a blurry shot, but I was so excited to see them!  The pair stayed for about an hour- just talking away...then they were gone.

  1. Congrats on your spotting of the red-bellied! They love to announce their presence for sure. We have a family of four that hang around all year. Love them! I'm with you on the sigh of disgust thing. :/

  3. Hilarity! I loved this post, it just made me chuckle. And isn't it fun to see a new bird visit your yard? That's a great find.

  4. woodpeckers are so loud ... i think they are calling to say "look lots of bugs in this tree" or "do you want to go on a date?" ... what do you think? they are gorgeous birds. ( :

  5. would repainting your bottles be worth ? glasses don't get me started on the cost of glasses :-) I notice my husband uses his 10 euro pharmacy glasses a lot more than the ones he paid over 500 euros for??? if I could I'd buy mine from the pharmacy too. i love the woodpecker photo especially with one in profile, way to go!

  7. My glasses cost a fortune, too. I've given up on ever having another pair of prescription sunglasses. I do buy the computer glasses, but I make them last as long as possible. :)

I enjoyed your randomness today. Made me smile.

  10. I like your bottle tree. Can't you get glass paint and repair the chips? I am always excited when I see a new bird in my yard!

  11. Cozy up to a wine loving friend and ask for their empty bottles. Glass paint is not that expensive and it goes a long way...
I used my Rx at (shudder) Wal Mart and got a pair for the computer for less than $50, no frills. Very helpful for me as the reading part of my bi-focals is just wrong for that distance. I heard an odd bird yesterday, had never heard it before, but was unable to spot it.

  16. Hahaha - another fun set of five, Old MacDonald! The bottle tree is fun, but I have no clue where to get colored bottles. I love the woodpeckers!

  18. Love your bottle tree. I want to know how you made the base, please.

I know this is strange but try a bar. There is no telling how many bottles they empty a night. Spray the paint inside and it may last longer.

  19. Love the bottle tree. I wonder if you could paint the bottles yourself somehow. Love red-bellied woodpeckers!

  20. I think you can purchase paint for putting on glass...but it may be expensive. If not, you could create your own orange and black bottles.

  21. I have cheap cheaters all over my house, but always have a pair hanging off my nose!

Love the woodpeckers! We hardly ever see them.

  23. Email me next time you need prescription glasses. I have a seriously great website I order from in Canada. I got two pairs of trendy rx glasses for $40 and that included s and h. I've had them for over a year and they've held up really well. A friend of mine in Canada told me about them :-)

  24. Maybe check with an upscale restaurant for their throw outs?? My eyes have reached the three different visions levels. I need computer glasses, TV glasses and reading glasses. I have a prescription one for when out and about but Walmart cheapos do just fine around the house--thank goodness.

  25. You are babysitting a whole farm there! You see the Geigo commercial - the spelling bee - the farmer was asked to spell cow - and he spelled it - c o w e i e i o ?
And I love your bottle tree - much prettier than mine! I love them.

  26. Love your bottle tree and I wonder if you can paint clear bottles orange and black??
Glad you saw the birds; they are great fun to watch.
Hope you have a lovely weekend.

  27. You and me both...the clowns we elected deserve a brick wall but there's not one long enough. I wish I could use cheaters; I'm so blind I'd have to wear six pair at a time and wouldn't that look stupid?
    Yep, it would.

  28. I've seen a few bottle trees in various places and always thought they were cool! The woodpeckers chose a nice perch!

  29. I love that you have a bottle tree! I'd like to hear the history of it. I love woodpeckers, too. You take great photos.

  30. Yeah, I buy those glasses at the Dollar Store for a buck...you did get robbed. Why don't you check with a local restaurant that serves alcohol...I bet they have a ton of empty bottles for you...just a thought. And I know they have glass paint that you could paint them any color you want. Hope you are having fun with your "farm" gang and glad you found those birds....I've never seen them either.

  31. Deanna has some good ideas above -- good thing as it's way early for me to have an intelligent thought. :)

Aren't those woodpeckers gorgeous? So neat you saw a pair.

  32. Red-bellied woodpeckers have a whole lot to say! Get them together with nuthatches and that is a bird speak fest. I wish our state fair was this time of year. Too dang hot in August!

  33. Your bottle tree is wonderful! I am a big fan of bottle trees.
We don't drink either, so we spent 2 summers looking along roadways, etc.. for bottle. I shot myself in the foot though; decided that I only wanted green, clear and blue bottles. It's like looking for a needle in a haystack. Someone told me to look at a wine bottle distributer on line, and they do have bottles... about 1.00 a piece.

Cool birds. Glad you were able to get a shot of them.

We buy our reading glasses at Costco, in a three pack. SO far, they've worked out great.

    Have a great weekend!

  35. I love your bottle tree. I have done this. I have also lined a little pathway in my woods with blue bottles. Stuck different sizes in the ground upside down at different levels, side by side. Looks cool when the sun hits. Go to the local liquor store and put the word out. People are always looking for a cool way to recycle. This is it! Aloha

  38. It's wonderful when that happens , picking up the sounds of birds you don't recognize . I spotted a red neck Woodpecker this Spring and yet where does he go in the Autumn. Not seen him since.
Bottles are so pretty I have a few blue one's which I have collected over the years. Not sure how I would create this effect though.

  40. That bottle tree is pretty. Perhaps you have a friend that partakes in a bottle of wine here or there and can save you the bottles? Why do glasses have to be so expensive? I have progressives. $500 just for the lenses. Then of course, the fancier the frame, the more they cost. sigh...

  41. I love your bottle tree. I have one in the mountains and I have trouble with the paint popping off too...The bottles used to be cheap but now that so many people have started collecting them they are just so expensive.....I've asked restaurants about giving me theirs but they usually will not...maybe you will have better luck than I have.....
